Published simultaneously in Spanish and English to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the National Museum of Fine Arts, Santiago, Chile, this book looks into the life and work of the Museum's designer, the renowned Chilean architect, Emilio Jéquier.Born in Santiago to French parents in 1866, he moved with his family to France in 1870 where he went on to study at the Émile Trélat, École Spéciale d'Architecture and later in the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, specialising in the design and construction of palaces and large-scale buildings.Jéquier's most important buildings include the Mapocho Station, the Santiago Stock Exchange, and the University Palace of the Catholic University of Chile. He also had a distinguished academic career at the Catholic University, where he was Head Professor of Architecture Projects and Director of the School of Architecture for many years. Indeed, Jéquier was responsible for the first reform to the syllabus of the School of Architecture, granting it the academic rigour it enjoys to this day. The previously unpublished material shared in this book offers the public unprecedented insight into all the work of this distinguished Chilean architect. It is hoped that this book is read by both specialists and the general public, becoming a source of knowledge and appreciation of Chilean cultual heritage, represented here in Emilio Jéquier's life and work.
